Xtream Codes vs M3U vs MAC Portal: Which IPTV Login to Use

· 14 min read · By the IPTV Online Channel team

Three login cards side by side: an Xtream Codes form, an M3U playlist link and a MAC portal screen on a set-top box
The three ways to sign in to an IPTV account, and what each one loads for you.

For most people, an Xtream Codes login is the better choice: you type a server address, a username and a password, and the player loads channels, the TV guide, movies, series and catch-up on its own. An M3U link is one long playlist address that more apps accept, but it usually needs a separate guide address. MAG and Formuler boxes can also sign in through a portal tied to the box’s MAC address.

Key takeaways

  • Use an Xtream Codes login (server, username, password) whenever your player offers it: the guide, movies, series and catch-up load on their own.
  • An M3U link works in more apps, but the TV guide usually needs a separate XMLTV address, and catch-up only works in players that read catch-up tags.
  • MAG and Formuler boxes can sign in with a portal URL tied to the box’s MAC address, so there is no username to type.
  • An M3U link contains your password in plain text: never post it, screenshot it or paste it into online playlist tools.

The three sign-in methods at a glance

All three methods open the same account and the same channels. What changes is how much the player learns about those channels, how much you type with a TV remote, and which devices accept the method at all.

How the three IPTV login types compare.

The short rule: if your app offers Xtream Codes, use it. Choose M3U when the app has no other option, and a portal on a MAG box or a Formuler box set up that way.

What an Xtream Codes login really is

“Xtream Codes” is the name of a server interface, an API, that most IPTV players understand. You type three short fields, and the player does the rest. Nothing extra is installed on your device; the name only describes how the player and the server talk.

Behind the scenes, the player asks the server a series of questions. Which categories exist? Which channels sit in each one, what is on the guide, which movies and series are available, and which channels keep an archive? Each answer comes back as structured data, so the player can build separate Live TV, Movies and Series screens instead of one long list.

Because the player asks again every time it refreshes, changes on the server reach you without any effort. A new channel, a renamed category or a corrected guide entry appears after the next update. If you want the full path from the source to your screen, see how IPTV works.

The three fields

  • Server (some apps say URL, host or portal URL): starts with http:// or https:// and may end with a port such as :8080. Nothing comes after the port.
  • Username: case-sensitive, exactly as in your welcome message.
  • Password: case-sensitive as well; a capital letter added by the TV keyboard is enough to fail.

Some apps also ask for a playlist name. That is only a label for you, so type anything that helps, such as “Living room” or “Cottage”.

Why the server address has a port number

A port is a numbered door on a server. Ordinary websites use port 80 for http and 443 for https, so browsers hide the number. IPTV servers often answer on another port, such as 8080, which is why the number has to be typed in full.

Leave the port out and the player knocks on the wrong door. It usually reports a timeout or “unable to connect” rather than a login error, which sends people looking in the wrong place.

Some networks block unusual ports. Hotel, campus and workplace Wi-Fi are the usual suspects, and the symptom is a login that works at home but not elsewhere; our guide to watching IPTV while travelling covers those networks. At home, a strict router firewall or filtering service can have the same effect.

Type http:// or https:// exactly as sent. A server set up for one won’t answer on the other just because the address looks more secure.

M3U is a plain-text playlist format that began life as a way to list audio files. As the M3U playlist format is described on Wikipedia, the file opens with an #EXTM3U line, and each entry has an #EXTINF line with its details followed by the address of the media. For a live channel, the duration is set to -1, which tells the player the stream never ends.

An IPTV M3U link is a web address that generates this file for your account on demand. On Xtream-style servers it typically looks like http://server:port/get.php?username=…&password=…&type=m3u_plus&output=ts. The same server, username and password from your Xtream Codes login are sitting inside it.

The last two values describe the list. The type value selects the playlist style, and m3u_plus is the usual default. The output value selects the stream format: ts for MPEG-TS, m3u8 for HLS. Keep both exactly as you received them unless support suggests a change.

What each channel line carries

In an extended playlist, each #EXTINF line holds attributes that players read. Kodi’s documentation lists the common ones:

  • tvg-id: the ID the player uses to match the channel to the TV guide.
  • tvg-name: the channel name as the guide knows it.
  • tvg-logo: the address of the channel logo.
  • group-title: the category the channel appears under.
  • catchup, catchup-days and catchup-source: optional tags that some players read to offer catch-up.

If a playlist has no tvg-id values, no player can match it to the guide automatically, even with the correct guide address. That is a playlist issue, not a problem with your TV or your internet.

Where the TV guide comes from in each method

With Xtream Codes, the player requests guide data from the same server with the same login. You don’t type anything extra, which is why this method produces the fewest empty guides.

With M3U, the guide is a separate file in XMLTV format, an XML layout for TV listings. Each programme in it is tied to a channel ID, and the player matches that ID to the tvg-id in your playlist. On Xtream-style servers the guide address follows the same pattern as the playlist: http://server:port/xmltv.php?username=…&password=…

Some players pick up the guide address automatically from an x-tvg-url entry in the playlist header. Others need it pasted into a field called EPG URL, XMLTV or TV guide source, often in the playlist’s own settings. If your guide has always been empty on an M3U login, check that field first; our guide to an empty or wrong TV guide covers the other causes.

On a portal login, the guide comes through the portal, so there is nothing to add. That is one reason MAG and Formuler owners rarely deal with guide addresses at all.

How catch-up behaves with each login

Catch-up lets you play a programme that already aired, on channels where the server keeps an archive. With Xtream Codes, the server tells the player which channels have an archive and how far back it reaches. The player then marks those programmes in the guide.

With M3U, catch-up works only when the playlist carries catch-up tags and the player knows how to read them. The IPTV Simple Client documentation for Kodi describes tags such as catchup, catchup-days and catchup-source, plus a catch-up window setting. Many simpler players ignore these tags, so a channel can show catch-up on an Xtream login and nothing on an M3U login in the same app.

On MAG and Formuler portals, catch-up comes from the portal and shows in its own guide. To learn how to open past programmes, pause live TV and record, read catch-up TV and timeshift explained.

Portal (MAC) login on MAG and Formuler boxes

A portal login uses no username at all. Your box has a MAC address, a hardware ID printed on a sticker and shown in its settings. You send us that address, it is registered on the server, and you type a portal URL into the box; from then on the box signs itself in.

MAG boxes

On a MAG box, the portal address goes into the system settings. Infomir’s documentation gives the path as System settings → Servers → Portals, where you enter a name and the portal URL, then save. Restart the box afterwards, and type the address exactly as sent, including http:// and any ending such as /c.

Formuler boxes

Formuler’s MYTVOnline app accepts three connection types: MAC-ID (portal URL only), XC for Xtream Codes (portal URL plus username and password) and M3U (playlist file or URL). Where you add them depends on the app version, as listed in Formuler’s portal setup guide:

  • MYTVOnline 2: Menu → Connections
  • MYTVOnline 3: Menu → Content Manager → Content Sources
  • MYTVOnline 4: Menu → Settings → App Settings → Content Sources

The MAC ID to send us is the one MYTVOnline shows, which starts with 00:1A on most models. Formuler notes that Z11-series boxes with MYTVOnline 3 use a newer ID starting with 00:1E:B8, shown under Content Sources → Add Portal and on the label at the back.

On a Formuler, an XC connection is often the quicker route because nothing needs registering. You enter the server address in the portal URL field and fill in the username and password.

Which apps support which login

Support changes as apps update, so treat this table as a starting point and confirm on the app’s own add-playlist screen. Each entry comes from the app’s official store listing, its maker’s documentation or our own setup guides.

Pros and cons of each method

Xtream Codes

  • Short to type on a remote: three fields instead of one long address.
  • Guide, movies, series and catch-up information arrive automatically.
  • Changes on the server appear at the next refresh, with no new link to paste.
  • Downside: the server field is easy to get wrong, usually by leaving out the port.
  • Downside: a few basic TV apps only offer a playlist URL field.

M3U playlist link

  • Accepted by almost every player, including VLC and Kodi.
  • One string to copy, which is handy when you can paste from a phone.
  • Downside: long and fragile; messaging apps often cut the end off or split it over two lines.
  • Downside: the password is visible inside the address.
  • Downside: the guide needs its own address, and movies and series may be mixed into the channel groups.

Portal (MAC)

  • Nothing to type except the portal URL; the box identifies itself.
  • Guide and catch-up come through the portal’s own screens.
  • Downside: tied to one box, so a replacement box needs a new registration.
  • Downside: only works on portal-capable boxes, not on phones or most streaming sticks.

Big channel lists and slower devices

With 50,900+ live channels and 150,000+ movies and series on our service, the size of the list matters on a small streaming stick. An M3U playlist arrives as one large text file that the player must download and read in full before showing anything. On a device with little memory, that first load can take minutes.

Xtream Codes players can ask for one category at a time and fetch movie and series lists separately. In practice that usually means a faster first screen and less memory in use. If an M3U login keeps freezing on an older Fire TV Stick or smart TV, switching the same account to Xtream Codes is often the simplest fix.

Whichever method you use, the guide is the heaviest download. Players let you limit how many days of listings they keep, and hiding groups you never watch shortens both the channel list and the guide. Those two settings help more than any change of login type on a device that is short of storage.

Refresh timing is the other difference. Many players reload an M3U playlist only when the app starts or on a schedule you set, while Xtream players refresh categories as you browse. If a channel you were told about doesn’t appear, refresh the playlist manually before assuming it’s missing.

Which one should you choose?

Match the method to the device and the app rather than to habit. These are the combinations that cause the fewest problems:

  • Fire TV Stick or Android/Google TV box with TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro: Xtream Codes. Our TiviMate setup on Fire TV walks through each screen. On Fire TV this applies to Fire OS models; Amazon lists the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026), 4K Select (2025) and HD (2026) as Vega OS devices, which can’t install Android player apps from outside Amazon’s store.
  • Smart TV app that only shows a playlist URL field: the M3U link, plus the guide address in the EPG field if the app has one.
  • MAG box: the portal, with the box’s MAC address registered first.
  • Formuler box: either the portal or XC; both work, and XC needs no registration.
  • Kodi: the M3U link and the XMLTV address in IPTV Simple Client.
  • Quick test on a computer: the M3U link in VLC, to confirm the account plays before you set up the TV.

You can add the same account to two apps on the same device, or to several devices. Only streams that are playing at the same moment count toward your screens. The choice of player app is a separate question; our comparison of free and paid IPTV players covers it.

Switching from one format to another

An M3U link and an Xtream Codes login are two views of the same account. You can usually read the three Xtream fields straight out of the M3U address.

  1. Take everything before /get.php: that is the server, including http:// and the port.
  2. Copy the text after username=, up to the next &.
  3. Copy the text after password=, up to the next &.
  4. In your player, add a new playlist, choose Xtream Codes and enter the three values.
  5. Open Live TV and wait for the guide to finish loading.
  6. Only then remove the old M3U playlist, so you always have one that works.

Going the other way, ask us for the M3U and guide addresses rather than assembling them by hand; a single wrong character in a long address fails quietly. Moving from a portal to Xtream Codes or M3U needs a username and password, which a MAC-registered portal doesn’t use, so message Online Support for the login that fits the new device.

What you lose when you switch

Most players save favourites, hidden groups, channel order and recording schedules per playlist. A new playlist starts clean, so write down your favourites or take the app’s backup before you delete anything. Keep both playlists for a day if you can; it costs nothing while only one is playing.

Keep your login private

An M3U link contains your username and password in plain view. Anyone holding the link holds your account, and every stream they open takes one of your screens. An Xtream login is the same three secrets, just split into fields.

  • Don’t post screenshots of the playlist screen, or the link itself, in forums, group chats or reviews.
  • Avoid online playlist editors and converters; pasting your link hands your password to a site you don’t know.
  • Type or paste the login into the app’s own field instead of sharing playlist files through cloud folders.
  • Before you sell or give away a device, delete the playlist and clear the app’s data.
  • If you think the login leaked, ask support to change the password. The M3U link and the Xtream login change together.

Our streaming privacy and security checklist covers the rest of the home setup, from the router password to fake renewal messages.

Common mix-ups and how to avoid them

Most failed logins come from putting the right details in the wrong place. These are the mistakes we see most often:

  • The whole M3U link in the Xtream server field. That field takes only the start of the address, up to and including the port.
  • A missing port. If the server address has :8080 or another number after it, the number is part of the address.
  • Extra characters after the port. A trailing slash or path in the Xtream server field makes many players fail.
  • A portal ending in the wrong place. A /c ending belongs to portal URLs on MAG and Formuler boxes, not to the Xtream server field.
  • Edited M3U values. Changing type or output by hand can drop logos, groups or playback.
  • A link cut short. Notes and chat apps wrap long addresses; the part after the break is lost when you copy.

If you see a specific message such as “invalid login” or “authorization failed”, the fixes are in how to fix IPTV login errors. Other codes and messages are decoded in IPTV error codes explained.

Still not loading? What to send us

If one format fails, try the other before anything else. When Xtream Codes works and M3U doesn’t, the link was probably cut off or mistyped; when neither works on two devices, the cause is the account or the network.

When you contact us, these details let us answer in one reply:

  • the player app and, if you can see it, its version number;
  • the device, such as a Fire TV Stick 4K or a Formuler box;
  • which login type you used and which fields you filled in;
  • a photo of the error screen, with the password covered;
  • whether the same login works on another device.

Send them through Online Support, which is private to your mobile number. Every IPTV subscription from us works with Xtream Codes, M3U and MAG or Formuler portals, so you can change method whenever a new device calls for it, and the setup guide has device-by-device steps.

Questions people ask

Is Xtream Codes better than M3U?

For most players, yes. An Xtream Codes login is three short fields and loads the TV guide, movies, series and catch-up information automatically. An M3U link opens the same account but usually needs a separate guide address, and catch-up only works in players that read catch-up tags. Use M3U when your app offers nothing else.

Where do I find the EPG URL for an M3U playlist?

On Xtream-style servers the guide address uses the same server, username and password as the playlist, with xmltv.php in place of get.php. Some players read it automatically from the playlist header. If yours doesn’t, ask support for the exact guide address for your account rather than building it by hand.

Can I convert an M3U link into an Xtream Codes login?

Usually, yes. The part before /get.php is the server address, including the port, and the values after username= and password= are your login. Enter those three in your player’s Xtream Codes option, wait for the guide to load, then remove the old M3U playlist.

What is a MAC portal login?

It is the sign-in method used by MAG and Formuler boxes. The box’s MAC address, a hardware ID on its label and in its settings, is registered on the server, and you enter a portal URL on the box. There is no username or password to type, but the login only works on that one box.

Does adding my login to several apps use more screens?

No. You can add the same login to as many apps and devices as you like. Only streams that are playing at the same moment count toward the number of screens on your plan, so an app sitting on the home screen uses nothing.
