Seven fixes for sound that drifts from the picture or drops out.

Sound that runs ahead of or behind the picture is usually fixed by switching the player’s video decoder, turning off audio passthrough when a soundbar can’t handle the format, or setting an audio delay. If only some channels are silent, choosing another audio track usually solves it. Start with one quick test: is it every channel, or just one?

First: one channel or every channel?

Switch to two or three other channels. If they play with perfect sound, the problem is that one stream, and the fix is usually another audio track or another quality of the same channel (fixes 5 and 6). If every channel is affected, the cause is your app, your device or your sound system, and fixes 1 to 4 will find it.

1. Switch the video decoder

IPTV players can decode video with the device’s chip (hardware) or with the app itself (software). When the one in use struggles, sound and picture drift apart. Find the decoder option in your player — usually under player or playback settings — switch to the other choice, and replay the channel. On Fire TV and Android boxes this is the first thing to try.

2. Turn off passthrough if you use a soundbar or receiver

Many channels carry Dolby Digital audio. With passthrough on, your streaming device sends that audio unchanged to the TV or soundbar; if the soundbar can’t decode it, you get silence, crackling or a delay.

On Fire TV, open Settings → Display & Sounds → Audio and set Surround Sound to Stereo. In the player, turn off any audio passthrough option. If that fixes it, your sound system was the limit, and stereo is the safe setting for it.

3. Set an audio delay

If the sound is always behind or ahead by about the same amount, delay one to match the other. Many players have an audio delay or audio offset setting, Fire TV has AV Sync Tuning in its Audio menu, and most soundbars have a lip-sync option in their app or on the remote. Change it in small steps while watching someone speak.

4. Bluetooth headphones and speakers

Bluetooth audio always arrives a little late, and some headphones lag enough to notice on speech. If sync is fine through the TV speakers but off on Bluetooth, use the delay setting from fix 3, or switch to wired headphones or a soundbar connected by HDMI.

5. Pick another audio track

Some channels carry more than one audio track: a second language, a described-video track, or separate surround and stereo versions. If a channel is silent or in the wrong language, open the player’s audio or track menu while it plays and choose another track.

Switching between French and English works the same way; our guide to French audio, subtitles and captions shows where the track menu sits in each app.

6. Try another quality of the same channel

If one channel drifts and the rest are fine, try its HD or SD version. Each version is encoded separately, so one may play cleanly when another doesn’t. Tell us the channel name so we can check the stream that misbehaves.

7. Restart and update

Sync errors can build up the longer a stream runs. Stopping the channel and starting it again resets the timing. If it keeps creeping back, restart the device and update the player app. Our buffering guide covers the same reset steps.

Is a small delay normal?

People notice lip-sync errors quickly, which is why broadcasters follow a standard for how far sound and picture may drift apart (ITU-R BT.1359). If you can see the delay when someone speaks, it’s worth fixing, even when it seems small.

When to contact us

If sound is out of sync on every device in your home, or on one channel everywhere, tell Online Support which channels and which devices are affected. A slow connection causes buffering rather than drifting sound, but if the picture also freezes, run the IPTV speed test on the same device. Every plan of our IPTV subscription with 4K channels includes this kind of help.

Questions people ask

Why is my IPTV audio out of sync?

Usually because the device’s decoder is struggling, or because the audio goes to a soundbar or Bluetooth device that adds delay. Switching the decoder, turning off passthrough, or setting an audio delay fixes most cases.

Why is there no sound on some IPTV channels?

Those channels probably use Dolby audio your device or sound system can’t play, or the default audio track is the wrong one. Choose another audio track during playback, or set your device’s audio output to stereo.

Does Bluetooth cause audio delay on IPTV?

Yes. Bluetooth adds some delay on every device, and some headphones lag enough to notice on speech. Use the audio delay setting in your player or device, or use wired audio.

Can slow internet make the sound drift?

Rarely. A slow connection causes buffering and freezing rather than sound slowly moving away from the picture. Drift almost always comes from the decoder, the audio output settings or a single stream.
